What is DirectCast?

In an era where digital communication is often routed through central servers, latency and privacy become significant concerns. The DirectCast Live P2P Streaming and Watch Together platform opens into a real-time peer-to-peer media workspace designed specifically to solve these issues. It enables one-to-one screen sharing, synchronized media viewing, and live voice and video interaction without ever uploading your media to a hosting server.

DirectCast also works as a private live file viewer for PDFs, images, notes, DOCX documents, CSV files, and spreadsheets. Editable files sync through the WebRTC data channel, while the host decides whether the guest can edit or view only. For direct one-off sharing without a live room, you can always try our Transfer Files Between Devices tool.

The interface immediately presents two primary actions: Host Session and Join Session. This allows two users to initiate or connect within seconds without the friction of account creation or software installation. By utilizing modern WebRTC protocols, DirectCast establishes a direct line between you and your peer. This means that if you are sharing your screen to debug code—perhaps after formatting a file using our JSON Formatter—the video stream travels via the shortest possible network path directly to the viewer.

How to Use DirectCast

Follow these quick steps to establish a peer-to-peer connection and start collaborating instantly.

1. Create or Join a Room

To begin a session, click "Start New Session". The platform generates a unique, cryptographically secure short connection ID and a scannable QR code. Share this ID with your peer via any secure messaging app.

The receiving user navigates to DirectCast, pastes the provided ID into the "Join" input field, or uses the integrated QR Code Scanner for instant mobile access.

2. Screen Sharing and Communication

Once established, the interface dynamically transitions into the workspace panel. From here, both connected users can utilize the PiP video overlay for face-to-face communication while sharing screen streams or local video files.

Click the "Share Screen" icon in the bottom toolbar to transmit your display. Adjust quality (Balanced, Motion, Detail) based on your network speed.

3. Watch Together and Sync

When a user selects a video file via the Folder icon, their browser instantly begins streaming that file directly to their partner using WebRTC. Both users can utilize the shared controls to Play, Pause, Fast-Forward, and scrub the timeline.

Advanced controls allow users to sync Volume and Brightness globally. If you only need synchronized YouTube playback instead of local files, use our dedicated Watch YouTube Together tool.

4. Live File Viewing

Select a PDF, image, TXT, Markdown, CSV, DOCX, XLS, or XLSX file from the same folder button. Images and PDFs open as synced previews. Notes, documents, and sheets become editable live workspaces when the host allows editing.

Advanced Tip: The host can revoke edit permissions at any time from the Room Chat sidebar under "Guest can edit live files".
