Brand or protect a PDF with a watermark

Add Watermark to PDF stamps a text or logo watermark across a PDF in your browser. Choose the text or upload an image, set the opacity, rotation, and position (including a tiled pattern), pick the pages, and download. It runs on your device, so nothing is uploaded.

Pick the Text tab to type your phrase and set the font size and colour, or the Image tab to upload a logo (a transparent PNG looks cleanest). Then shape how it appears: an Opacity slider makes it a subtle, see-through overlay so the content underneath stays readable; Rotation angles it (the classic −45° diagonal is the default); and Position places it Center, in a corner, or as a repeating Tile across the whole page. You can also drag the watermark on the preview to a custom spot.

Two controls add real flexibility. Layer puts the mark Over Content for a bold stamp or Behind Content so the text reads on top of a faint background mark. Apply To targets All Pages, just the current one, or a Custom Range like "1-5, 8" — handy for leaving a cover or signature page clean.

Everything runs locally, so contracts and drafts never leave your device, and the output carries no Randomly.online branding — only your watermark. There's no signup, and your original file is unchanged.

One honest note: a watermark deters casual copying but isn't uncrackable — someone with advanced tools could attempt removal. Tiling it at low opacity over the text makes that far harder. For a company seal rather than a watermark, Add Stamp to PDF is the better fit.

When a watermark helps

How to add a watermark to a PDF

Step 1: Upload your PDF

Drag it in or click Upload PDF. Thumbnails and a zoomable preview appear.

Step 2: Choose text or image

On the Text tab, type your phrase and set size and colour; on the Image tab, upload a logo (transparent PNG recommended) and scale it.

Step 3: Style it

Set Opacity, Rotation (−45° for a diagonal), and Position (Center, a corner, or Tile). Drag it on the preview for a custom spot.

Step 4: Target pages and layer

Use Apply To (All, Current, or a custom range) and Layer (Over or Behind Content).

Step 5: Download

Click Download Watermarked PDF.

Realistic example. You're sending a draft contract. On the Text tab type "CONFIDENTIAL", set opacity to about 0.3, rotation to −45°, Position to Tile, Apply To All Pages, Layer Over Content, and download — a clearly marked document that's still readable.

Advanced tip. For a logo that doesn't sit in an ugly box, use a transparent PNG and drop the opacity to 30–40% so the page content shows through cleanly.

Common mistake to avoid. Putting a dark, opaque watermark Over Content can hide the text — lower the opacity or switch to Behind Content for readability.

Recommendation. Need to remove a watermark instead? Remove Watermark from PDF. Want a seal/stamp? Add Stamp to PDF.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add a watermark to a PDF?

Upload the PDF, choose the Text or Image tab, and set your watermark. Adjust opacity, rotation, and position, pick the pages, then click Download Watermarked PDF. A live preview shows the result as you go, and everything runs in your browser with no upload.

Can I use my logo as a watermark?

Yes. Switch to the Image tab and upload your logo, then use the scale slider to size it. A PNG with a transparent background works best, because the tool keeps the transparency so only the logo shows — not a white box around it. Lower the opacity for a subtle branded look.

How do I make a tiled or diagonal watermark?

For a tiled pattern, set Position to Tile so the watermark repeats across the whole page. For the classic diagonal look, set Rotation to around −45°. Combining Tile with a diagonal angle and low opacity is the strongest deterrent against cropping or removal.

How do I control the transparency?

Use the Opacity slider. A lower value (around 0.3) makes the watermark a faint, see-through overlay so the content underneath stays readable, while a higher value makes it bold and prominent. For documents people still need to read, keep the opacity low.

Can I put the watermark behind the text?

Yes. The Layer setting offers Over Content (the mark sits on top, for a bold stamp) and Behind Content (the text reads on top of a faint background watermark). Behind Content is ideal for a logo or subtle brand mark that shouldn't obscure the words.

Can I watermark only some pages?

Yes. Under Apply To, choose All Pages, Current Page Only, or Custom Range and enter pages like "1-5, 8". This lets you mark the body of a document while leaving a cover page or a signed page clean.

What's the best image format for a logo watermark?

A transparent PNG. The tool preserves the alpha channel, so only your logo's shape is stamped — there's no opaque rectangle around it. JPGs work too but have a solid background. Pair the PNG with a reduced opacity so the underlying text and graphics remain legible.

Are my files uploaded — is it safe?

No. The watermark is applied entirely in your browser, so the PDF and your logo never leave your device or reach a server. That matters for confidential drafts and contracts. Closing the tab clears everything from memory.

Can I add a watermark on my phone's browser?

Yes. The tool works in any modern browser on iPhone or Android — no app needed. Upload, set your text or logo and style, and download. The live preview and drag-to-place are easier on a larger screen, so a laptop is more comfortable for fine positioning.

Is it free, with no watermark or signup?

Yes. The tool is free and adds only your watermark — it never stamps its own branding on your output — and there's no account to create. Set up your watermark and download a clean, marked file with no paywall.

Can the watermark be removed later?

A watermark is written into the page content, so a casual reader can't simply delete it. But no watermark is completely removal-proof — someone with advanced PDF tools could attempt it. Tiling the mark at low opacity over the text makes removal far more tedious and is the best deterrent.

Does it change my original PDF?

No. The tool creates a new watermarked file for you to download; your original stays exactly as it was on your device. Keep the original if you'll need an unmarked version later.
