What is a Savings Goal Calculator?

A Savings Goal Calculator tells you how much to set aside to reach a target. Enter your goal and timeframe and it shows the monthly amount you need to save; or enter what you can save and it shows how long it'll take. Add an interest rate and starting balance for a realistic projection. It runs in your browser.

Saving for something specific — a deposit, a trip, an emergency fund — is easier when you know the monthly number. Working backwards from a goal and a deadline turns a vague intention into a concrete plan.

This calculator solves for whichever piece you're missing (the monthly amount, or the time), optionally factoring in interest on your savings. It runs entirely in your browser, so your figures stay private.

Working backwards from a goal

Without interest, the math is simple: the monthly amount needed is (goal − starting balance) ÷ number of months. To reach $6,000 in 12 months from zero, you save $500 a month. With interest, your contributions also earn returns, so you need a bit less each month to hit the same goal — the calculator accounts for this using the future-value-of-contributions logic from compound interest, which is why a realistic rate lowers the required monthly amount over long horizons. It works in several directions: tell it the goal and the deadline to get the monthly amount; tell it the monthly amount to get the time; and include a starting balance that's already growing. This goal-oriented framing is the difference from a plain compound interest calculator, which projects open-ended growth — here you anchor to a target. The honest caveats apply: it assumes you save steadily and that the interest rate holds, whereas real savings rates change and investment returns fluctuate, and it doesn't model tax or inflation unless you reduce the rate to a 'real' return. Use it to set a realistic plan, not as a guarantee, and it isn't financial advice. Everything computes locally. For open-ended growth, see the Compound Interest Calculator; for retirement, the Retirement Calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I work out how much to save each month?

Subtract what you've already saved from your goal, then divide by the number of months: monthly = (goal − current) ÷ months. For $6,000 in 12 months from zero, that's $500 a month. With interest, you need slightly less, which the calculator factors in when you enter a rate.

Can it tell me how long a goal will take?

Yes. Enter your goal and the amount you can save each month, and the calculator works out how many months (and years) it'll take to get there, including any interest your savings earn. It's the reverse of solving for the monthly amount.

Does adding interest change the plan much?

Over short periods, only a little; over long ones, more. Interest means your contributions and balance grow on their own, so you need somewhat less each month to reach the same goal. The longer the timeframe and the higher the rate, the bigger the effect — the calculator shows it when you add a rate.

Should I include my current savings?

Yes, if you have a head start. A starting balance counts toward the goal (and earns interest if you set a rate), reducing the amount you still need to save. Enter what you've already put aside so the plan reflects your real situation rather than starting from zero.

Is this a guaranteed plan?

No. It assumes you save the amount consistently and that the interest rate stays constant, but life and markets vary — rates change, returns fluctuate, and unexpected expenses happen. Use it as a realistic target and revisit it as things change; it's a planning tool, not a promise, and not financial advice.

Does it account for inflation or tax?

Not directly. To approximate inflation, lower the interest rate to a 'real' (after-inflation) return; for tax on interest, use an after-tax rate. By default it projects nominal amounts, so a goal far in the future will buy less than today — keep that in mind when setting the target.

Is it free, and do I need to sign up?

Yes, it's completely free with no account, no trial, and no limit on how many times you use it. It runs entirely in your browser, so there's no sign-in wall — just open the page and calculate.

Is my data private?

Yes. Everything is calculated in your browser — the numbers you enter are never sent to a server, and nothing is stored once you close the tab. That keeps any personal figures (salary, loan, health) on your own device.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. It runs in your phone's browser with nothing to install, so you can calculate on Android or iOS. The layout adapts to small screens, so entering numbers and reading the result is easy on the go.

Does it work offline?

Once the page has loaded, the calculation runs entirely on your device, so it keeps working without a connection. You only need to be online to open the page the first time — which is also why nothing you enter is uploaded.

Can I copy or share the result?

Yes. You can copy the result to your clipboard with one click, and many results can be shared. Because everything is calculated locally, copying is instant with no upload step.

How accurate is it, and is this professional advice?

The math is accurate for the inputs you give, and the formula is shown so you can verify it. But results are estimates for general use, not professional advice — finance calculators use simplified assumptions and ignore fees and rate changes, and health calculators are general estimates, not medical advice. For important decisions, consult a qualified professional.
